'FOR THE LOVE OF KATE'
A tribute to endurance against all odds
For the Love of Kate is the account of a harrowing and painfully frustrating journey traveled by two sisters through the mayhem of an antiquated and misguided health system. In 2004, Kate died of bone marrow cancer at the age of 60 …
This story is a powerful, detailed and solitary account of a carer’s journey, a fight to ensure that her sister, who had compounding illnesses, that of schizophrenia and incurable multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer), had the right to live and die with dignity.
It’s a true story about the love shared between two sisters and highlights the powerful connection a carer can have with a person who is suffering the effects of a debilitating illness.
Carers are the lifeline to a dying person’s source of love and dignity. This book also highlights that there is little or no care given to the carers.
This story also pulls on the positive effects humor can have in the face of adversity.

FOR THE LOVE OF KATE; A TRIBUTE TO ENDURANCE AGAINST ALL ODDS
For the Love of Kate is the account of a harrowing and painfully frustrating journey travelled by two sisters through the mayhem of an antiquated and misguided health system.
In 2004, Kate died of bone marrow cancer at the age of 60 … she was also schizophrenic.
Annette d Chand’s credentials, summarised in ‘About the Author’, are formidable and diverse.
She was Kate’s staunch ‘guardian angel’.
Her intent in writing this autobiography /biography was twofold:
- To bring awareness and focus to the injustice and ignorance of our mental health system and the way in which preconceived ideas attached to a mental illness can take precedence over a deadly physical disease
- To pay a lasting tribute to Kate’s massive struggle with endurance, and in so doing, bring a positive change to those who are waging similar battles Anni’s dedication to justice for the mentally ill in society is the integral heartbeat of this work. The strength, observance, integrity and persistence embodied in the experience through which Anni passed resound through every page of her story. Told from the heart, it is touching and heavily emotional … it stays with the reader long after the final page is turned. It magnifies the fear that lives within each of us … being caught in a helpless and vulnerable state. As Kate said, ‘Anni, nobody should live like this.’
